Chapter Twelve

I leaned in towards the bathroom mirror and wiped the last crumb of crusty sleep from the outer edge of my eye then finished applying my mascara. Sleep hadn’t come easy last night. The puzzle around Prudence’s murder, our parents and Nicolas was thickening. The missing pieces gnawed at the back of my mind all night. In a last-ditch effort to look alive, I pinched my cheeks, sending blood rushing to them.

“You look fine,” said the fluffy lump in the middle of my bed. “If you stare at yourself any longer, you’re going to turn into stone.”

“That’s Medusa silly.” I rolled my eyes and exited the ensuite with a sigh. Grabbing my pink woollen jacket off the bed I threw it around my shoulders. “I think you have your Greek mythology mixed up. Although, I hear she was gorgeous.”

“I suppose, if you call a head full of hissing snakes gorgeous.” Miss Saffron purred a silky soft meow, twisted, and rolled onto her back exposing her underbelly, waiting for a morning scratch.

“You really are a spoilt familiar,” I said, running my fingernails up her belly halting underneath her chin for a lengthy tickle. She giggled and her body twitched under my touch.

“But you love me.”

“That I do. Come on,” I said. “The day isn’t going to wait forever.”

I hit the bottom step of the staircase with Miss Saffron hot on my heels. Turning the corner, I paused at the sight of the three witches sitting at the kitchen table. Three powerful witches, one of course, is Aunt Edie. The other two being Olive and Aubrey Garcia. Two of the most powerful witches in the Elder Flame Coven. Ex-members of the Elder Flame Coven, since they’re now retired. I’m not sure if a witch really retired from a coven.

Aubrey’s darkened eyes looked my way and a burst of heat pulverised my core. My lips opened slightly, and I gasped, unprepared for the warmth her gaze gave off. They’d arrived in Saltwater Cove just before Halloween, hoping to track down Camille and Cynthia Stenson’s killer. Success, with a little help from yours truly. Miss Saffron strutted over to her basket in the corner and curled up. She didn’t have me fooled one iota, with her ears pointed forward, I knew she wasn’t about to go back to sleep. “Olive, Aubrey, great to see you again. What brings you by this morning?”

A smile graced Aubrey’s expression. “Good morning, Evelyn. How nice to see you again.”

“I invited the ladies over this morning to talk about your situation,” Aunt Edie said, topping up Olive’s china cup with what smelled like lemongrass and mint tea.

My situation? What situation exactly? There’s so many to choose from.

“Stop frowning dear,” Olive said, elegantly taking a sip of her tea. “We made a promise to your aunt that we will do everything in our power to help you. After all, we do have some influence with the High Council.”

High Council?

Olive continued. “It’s the least we can do, after all you went through to catch Camille and Cynthia’s killer.
